Virgin Islands at the Olympics
Virgin Islands (also known as the United States Virgin Islands) first competed at the Olympic Games in 1968, and have participated at the Games from then on except in 1980 when the nation joined the US-led boycott. Their only Olympic medal is a silver won by Peter Holmberg in sailing at the 1988 Summer Olympics.
While the vast majority of small nations are still yearning to win an Olympic medal, Virgin Islands have already done the feat. Peter Holmberg handed Virgin Islands its first-ever medal by clinching the silver medal in the finn event sailing at the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics.
The US territory sent seven athletes in the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games and competed in athletics, boxing, sailing and swimming.
