British Virgin Islands at the Olympics
The British Virgin Islands' flag first waved at the Olympics in 1984 when they sent a nine-athlete delegation to Los Angeles, California, USA. Since then, they have never missed a single Summer Games but they are yet to win an Olympic medal.
Some attribute this to the fact that the 1984 Olympic team is by far the biggest team that the British Virgin Islands has ever sent to participate in the Summer Games. As a matter of fact, in the 200 Sydney and 2004 Athens Games, the British Virgin Islands only sent a single athlete each time. Many say that the sheer small size of the country explains why they do not have a lot of Olympic athletes, let alone an Olympic medalist.
While most Caribbean countries would forgo joining the Winter Games, the British Virgin Islands did make an appearance in the 1984 Winter Games in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. Skater Erroll Fraser represented the British Virgin Islands in the 500 meters and 1000 meters speed skating. After 1984, they decided not to send a delegation to the Winter Games until 30 years later when skater Peter Crook represented the country in freestyle skating for the men's half pipe event in Sochi, Russia.
