Sport in the British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands is an overseas British territory in the Caribbean east of Puerto Rico. It is part of the Virgin Islands Archipelago and is considered as one of the best places for sailing. It is their most popular sport and also one of their best tourist magnets. The relatively calm waters makes it perfect for various sailing events and the biggest one is the Spring Regatta which is a series of sailing races that takes a whole week in April.

The British Virgin Islands first competed in the Summer Olympic Games in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games and have been a consistent attendee. As far as the Winter Olympic Games are concerned, they did join the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games but skipped most games after that and only joined again in the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

BVI, however have produced quite a roster of players that has done pretty well from Desire Montgomery Butler, a captain of the British Virgin Islands football team and played in the FIFA World Cup qualifying matches (2002, 2006 and 2010), all the way to Christopher Telemaque. Sadly, the British Virgin Islands is yet to receive their first Olympic medal.
