Marathon Mexico 1968 Olympic Games

The men’s marathon at the 1968 Mexico Olympic Games was won by Ethiopian runner Mamo Wolde. Here is a video of the race. For many people this race will be remembered for the inspirational effort by John Stephen Akwani who finished the race injured and in pain, but determined to finish for his country.

Marathon Helsinki 1960 Olympic Games

The men’s marathon at the 1960 Rome Olympic Games in Italy was won by Ethiopian runner Abebe Bikila, running in bare feet. Abebe Bikila became the first black African to take home a gold medal in any sport. Here is a video of the event. See more on the men’s Olympic Games marathon.
