Guyana at the Commonwealth Games
The Co-operative Republic of Guyana lies in the north-east of South America and borders Suriname, Brazil and Venezuela. The country gained independence and joined the Commonwealth in 1966, though they participated at the first Commonwealth Games in 1930 under the name British Guiana.

- The coutry changed its name from British Guiana to Guyana in 1966 when it gained independence.
- Guyana (also as British Guiana) has a remarkable record of attending every Games since 1930 bar three (1950, 1974, 1986).
- In the 1934 British Empire Games, Phil Edwards won a gold medal representing British Guiana in the 880 yards. Edwards also competed for Canada at several Olympic Games.
- They have had some medal sucess, including gold in athletics track in 1934 and 2002 and in boxing in Edmonton 1978.
