Sport in Guyana
Guyana, officially referred to as the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, is located in the northern part of South America. In this part of the world, cricket is considered as the most popular sport.
Guyana also loves playing softball cricket or beach cricket and football. Field hockey, rounders, netball, lawn tennis, table tennis, basketball, squash, boxing, horse racing and rugby are also played in the country. Guyana had also hosted a few international cricket matches in 2007 as part of the Cricket World Cup. They have a 15, 000 seater stadium, called the Providence Stadium, built specifically for hosting sporting events like the Cricket World Cup. Guyana is also a member of CONCACAF (football) and has five horse racing courses.
Sports is an integral part of the Guyanese culture which is why they have produced their fair share of internationally recognized athletes like like Michael Anthony Parris who is an Olympic medalist, Andrew “Sixhead” Lewis, Wayne “Big Truck” Braithwaite and “Vicious” Vivian Harris, all of whom are world title holders in boxing and probably the most recognizable figure in Guyanese female boxing, Gwendolyn “ Stealth Bomber” O'Neil. Guyana has also been investing heavily into football and is growing in popularity. Most of spectators are willing to go along with their favorite teams even when they play out of town.
