Tanzania borders on to the Indian Ocean to the east and has land borders with eight other nations. Tanzania made their debut at the 1966 Commonwealth Games. Tanzania was formed by the merging of Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964. Tanganyika competed at the 1962 Games, and many sources include the results of this team with Tanzania.

- Their first-ever gold medal came in the 1974 Games in Christchurch when the great Filbert Bayi won the athletics 1500m, beating the New Zealander John Walker.
