There were 33 sports on the program for the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games. Five new sports were added to the program in Tokyo: baseball and softball, karate, sport climbing, skateboarding and surfing, as well as many new events such as 3x3 basketball, triathlon relay, women's canoe slalom, and BMX freestyle. A total of 18 new events and 474 extra athletes appeared on the Tokyo Olympic program. There were 339 gold medals to be won. Aquatics had the most number of events at 49 total, followed by athletics with 48 events, and cycling with 22 events (see number of available medals by sport).

- Sport Climbing — bouldering and lead and speed combined climbing
- Surfing — men's and women's shortboard surfing, to be held about one hour from Tokyo at Shida Shita Point

- Volleyball — indoor and beach volleyball

- Wrestling (Greco-Roman and Freestyle)
