As the host nation, Brazil qualified automatically. It was their 20th consecutive appearance in the World Cup Finals. The other 31 qualifiers were finalized in 2013. The number of qualifiers from each confederation are: AFC (4), CAF (5), CONCACAF (4), CONMEBOL (6) and UEFA (13).
Of the teams that qualified for the 2010 finals, the following teams failed to qualify for the 2014 tournament: North Korea, South Africa, New Zealand, Paraguay, Denmark, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia.
The qualifying teams that did not play in the previous World Cup were: Russia, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Colombia, Ecuador, Costa Rica and Iran.
The only team to make its debut in Brazil 2014 was Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The lowest ranked team to qualify, based on the October 2013 FIFA World Ranking (which was used to seed teams in the draw) was Cameroon, who were ranked 59th. The highest ranked team not to qualify was Ukraine (ranked 20th).
