The Republic of Malta entered the Commonwealth in 1964 but made their debut at the 1958 Games in Cardiff, Wales. Since then they have attended all Games bar three editions.

- Malta have enjoyed medal success in judo and shooting.
- In 2003, the Mediterranean island successfully hosted the Games for the Small States of Europe and were chosen as the venue for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in December 2005.
- The Malta Olympic Committee employs a number of local and overseas sports scientists and coaches to assist athletes to reach their full potential, and in 1994 they set up the Sports and Human Performance Centre to fulfill this purpose.
