Countries and Territories yet to participate at the Com Games
Here are some countries and territories that have yet to be a part of the Commonwealth Games, and may send teams in the future. Not many Commonwealth dependencies and nations have yet to take part. See the list of current participating teams and past countries and territories.
- Tokelau - Tokelau is an island group of the central Pacific Ocean in the northern Ryukyu Islands, north of Samoa. Tokelau became part of New Zealand (dependency) in 1948. Tokelau were expected to take part in its first Commonwealth Games in Delhi, but no team turned up.
- Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus - this territory has made applications to the Commonwealth Games Federation to send a team to participate at the Games.
- Christmas Island - The Territory of Christmas Island is a territory of Australia in the Indian Ocean, with about 1,400 residents (in 2006)
- the Cocos (Keeling) Islands - The Territory of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, also called Cocos Islands and Keeling Islands, is a territory of Australia, located in the Indian Ocean, with about 600 residents (in 2009)
- Rodrigues - a semi-autonomous island part of the Republic of Mauritius located in the Indian Ocean, with about 38,000 residents in 2011.
- Zanzibar - a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania, in East Africa
- Pitcairn Islands - The Pitcairn Islands has only a small population (currently 50-60 people) so is unlikely to be able to send any participants.
- The British Indian Ocean Territory - there is currently has no permanent population here although there is a sizeable population who were born in the territory but currently live in Mauritius and the UK and so would be eligible to compete for this team based on birth criteria.
- Commonwealth applicants - e.g. Sudan, Algeria, South Sudan, Somaliland and Yemen. The Colony of Aden and Federation of South Arabia, precursors to modern Yemen, have participated before in 1962 and in 1966. Sudan was an Anglo-Egyptian protectorate until independence in 1956. South Sudan is currently applying for membership of the Commonwealth of Nations.
- Cornwall - the Cornwall Commonwealth Games Association (CCGA) sent a bid for participation in the 2006 Commonwealth Games, however their application was rejected by the Federation.
- Other Territories - there are quite a few regions of the Commonwealth that will probably never send a team as they lack a permanent population:
- South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands
- British Antarctic Territory
- The New Zealand territory of Ross Dependency
- The Australian external territories of Australian Antarctic Territory, Ashmore and Cartier Islands, Coral Sea Islands and Heard Island and McDonald Islands.
