Sporting Highlights for 2013
The year 2013 was another great year in sport. The Super Bowl in the US produced a riveting game, with extra excitement of a power outage in the stadium. One of the greatest ever sporting comebacks was provided by the America's Cup sailing race held in San Francisco. The US Oracle Team came back from being 1-8 down to win 9-8 against Team New Zealand.
In cricket, legendary player Sachin Tendulkar retired, and there was a Ashes doubleheader - with England dominating at home, and the fortunes reversing with Australia dominating in their home series.
In tennis, Andy Murray finally won the big one, becoming the first male British-born tennis player to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936.
The highest paid sportsman in 2013 according to Forbes Magazine was announced as Tiger Woods with $US78.1 million dollars in earnings.
Chris Froome, winners of the 2013 Tour de FranceThe 2013 Tour de France was won by an Englishman again (in 2012 it was the first-ever win by a British rider, Bradley Wiggins), this time Chris Froome from Team Sky. He would go on to win in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
The 2013 Laureus World Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards went to sprinter Usain Bolt and British athlete Jessica Ennis.
