Australian Sporting Highlights in 2013
The year 2013. Another successful year in sports for Australian athletes. Australian women won the Cricket World Cup held in India. Adam Scott became the first Australian to win the US Masters, beating Angel Cabrera in a play-off. Also in golf, Australian Jason Day won the individual title of the Golf World Cup, and with Adam Scott winning the team event.
After a dismal performance in England, the Aussie cricketers redeemed themselves in the Ashes part 2, winning the series 5-0. In December, surfer Mick Fanning produced two consecutive clutch performances to claim his third world title in spectacular fashion. In Rugby League, Queensland won its eighth consecutive State of Origin.
However, the big sporting news of the year was off the sporting field - major sports were rocked with doping allegations, particularly those associated with the 'sport scientist' Dank who administered possible banned substances. This has caused turmoil in many of the clubs that he was associated with over the years, and is still ongoing.
The 2013 Don Award, which recognises the sporting achievement of the year which has inspired the people of Australia, was awarded to golfer Adam Scott.
US based basketballer Andrew Bogut was the highest paid Australian athlete for 2013 with earnings of $16 million.
