Uzbekistan at the Winter Olympics
From 1952 up to 1988, the Central Asian nation of Uzbekistan was part of the Soviet Union team. The dissolution of USSR on December 25, 1991 paved the way for the nation’s participation in both the Winter and Summer Olympics. Athletes from Uzbekistan took part at the 1992 Games as part of the Unified Team at the Albertville Winter Olympic Games. Two years later, at the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympic Games, they competed for the first time as a sovereign country. The nation and has participated all Winter Olympics since then.
Uzbekistan’s first-ever gold at the Winter Games was captured by Lina Cheryazova in the women’s aerials event in freestyle skating, who outperformed Marie Lindgren of Sweden and Hilde Synnøve Lid of Norway, which claimed the silver and bronze medals respectively. The gold medal effort of Cheryazova is also the solitary medal the nation had earned so far at the Winter Games.
