Uruguay at the Olympics
Uruguay first participated at the Olympic Games in Paris in 1924, and has sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games since then, except in 1980 when it showed its partial support to a boycott that was spearheaded by the United States.
The South American nation boasts of two gold medals in football which happens to be the most popular sport in the world. The country’s gold medal in football in 1924 Paris Olympics is the nation’s first. The Uruguay’s football team also won the FIFA World Cup two times, in 1930 by beating Argentina as a host and in 1950 by wielding the upset axe on Brazil.
Rower Guillermo earned the distinction as the first Uruguayan athlete to win a medal at the Olympics by clinching bronze in the men’s single sculls in rowing at the 1932 of edition of the Games.
