Trinidad and Tobago qualified for the FIFA World Cup finals for the first time in 2006. In doing so they became the least populous country to have qualified for the World Cup (a record previously held by Northern Ireland).

Trivia

• Trinidad and Tobago missed out narrowly on qualifying in 1974, and in 1990 came tantalizingly close to going to Italy but were beaten 1-0 in their final qualifying match by the United States.

• Trinidad and Tobago's most famous footballer is Dwight Yorke, played for Blackburn Rovers in the English Premier League.
• The national team calls itself the "Soccer Warriors"
• The Caribbean islands, which have a population of more than one million inhabitants, enjoyed their best win more than 30 years ago, beating Antigua and Barbuda 11-1. The national team took their worst defeat more recently. In 2000 they lost 7-0 to Mexico in the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City.
