History
Synchronized swimming was popularized in the 1920s. The sport made its competition debut in the first world championships, held in Belgrade in 1973. After being a demonstration sport in the 1952, 1956 and 1968 Olympics (more about Olympic demonstration sports), it became an official Olympic event in the 1984 Los Angles Games.
Trivia
- Russia consistently are the best team in the world. The Russian synchronized swimming team has topped the medal table at every world championships since 1998.
