• At the inaugural Championships in Belgrade in 1973, the swimming program included 15 events for male athletes, and 14 events for female athletes.
• Since the 9th Championships in Fukuoka in 2001, 20 events in the
  swimming program have been contested by the male and female athletes.

• In 1986, the 4 x 200m freestyle relay for women was added to the program.
• In 2001, the 50m event for breaststroke, backstroke butterfly) events were added, as well as the 800m freestyle for men and 1500m freestyle for women.
