This is a simple test providing a rough estimate of shoulder and neck mobility. This flexibility test is part of the ALPHA-Fit test protocol for adults.
equipment required: wall
pre-test: Explain the test procedures to the subject. Perform screening of health risks and obtain informed consent. Prepare forms and record basic information such as age, height, body weight, gender, test conditions. Perform an appropriate warm-up. See more details of pre-test procedures.
procedure: The subject stands with their back against the wall, with the feet 1½ foot away from the wall. The buttocks, back and shoulder plates should rest against the wall. The subject raises their hands with thumbs ahead, to above the head as far as they can while keeping your arms straight and shoulder-width apart. When the hands are above the head, they attempt to turn the hands and place the back of the hands against the wall. Elbows and wrists need to be kept straight. Only one attempt is allowed.
scoring: the final position of the hands against the wall is noted, and a result is recorded for each side. The test score is the sum of the points scored for the right and left side.
- 5 points = the whole dorsal side of the hand is in contact with the wall (no restriction of range of motion)
- 3 points = only fingers reach the wall (moderate restriction of range of motion)
- 1 points = no hand contact with the wall (severe restriction of range of motion)
target population: This test is part of the ALPHA-Fit test protocol for adults
