Darren Sammy was the first and only St Lucian to be called up to the West Indies Cricket Team and play international cricket. He is a right-handed batsman and a fast-medium bowler. On making his One Day International (ODI) debut against Bangladesh in 2004, Sammy became the first person from the island of St. Lucia to play international cricket. Sammy also spearheaded the West Indies to the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 victory against Sri Lanka, which their first major trophy for 8 years. They won the ICC Champions trophy against England in 2004.
St Lucia has always been committed to hosting, when it can, regional and international tournaments and meets. The ITF Coca Cola Junior Tennis tournament attracts players from around the world, several OECS events like swimming, cycling and other tournaments are regularly held here. Many of these successes have been due in part to the efforts of the people behind the scenes at the association level. The SLOC has the privilege of acting as host to some sixteen associations, giving them the advantage of a platform and a unifying body, sharing the Olympic spirit which articulates an ideal that is a natural part of St. Lucian culture.
