Powerchair Hockey

Powerchair hockey or Power hockey is a fast-paced game of hockey (also called electric wheelchair hockey), that is played while using an electric-powered wheelchair. Disabled people are able to maneuver around the court and control the stick using an electric wheelchair, and enjoy undertaking competitive sport.

This sport came into existence by an accident in 1970, when some schools started giving sports lessons to pupils with disabilities. The children who started to play this game were severely handicapped. This sport was proven to be great for them as it does not require any muscle power.

The rules of power hockey are similar to the rules of ice hockey. The sport is played on a basketball court instead on an ice court, and a plastic ball is used instead of a hockey puck. The hockey stick used in power hockey is also entirely made of plastic. In this sport, goalies have limited ability to move and they also can not freeze the ball, so the referee will stop the play when the ball is underneath the goaltender’s wheelchair.
