Sport in The Gambia

The Gambia, or simply Gambia, is a West African country bordered by Senegal for the most part and is considered as the smallest country on the African mainland. When it comes to sports though, there is no denying the love of the Gambians for football.

It is virtually impossible to find a town that does not have a field dedicated to playing football. They even have a national football team, named The Scorpions, but due mainly to funding shortages, have never qualified for either the African Nations Cup or the World Cup. This however has not dampened the country's love of the sport.

Other sports that have gained popularity include basketball, athletics (track & field), cricket, softball and traditional wrestling. Associated football (soccer) is also quite popular in Gambia and they are an affiliate member of FIFA and CAF since 1968.

Though the country is small, it has not fallen short of producing some of the best athletes in the world. Boxer Badou Jack is a WBC super-middleweight champion, goalkeeper Pa Dembo Touray plays for the Swedish team Vasalunds IF and middlefielder Bubacarr Jobe plays for the Canadian team Toronto FC II to name just a few of their international athletes.
