Comoros is an island nation located in the Indian Ocean, at Mozambique Channel's northern end at the African east coast. The island's taste in sports is largely influenced by the French who colonized the territory in the past. This means that Comoros play a lot of basketball, soccer, athletics (mostly track and field), tennis, swimming as well as cycling.
They have played in various international events like the Aces Cup, the Francophone Games and the Indian Ocean Games. Football (soccer) is by far the most widely played sport in the country but basketball is quickly catching up in popularity. The Comoros national football team became a member of the Confederation of African Football in 2003 and FIFA in 2005. Football is quite popular that each town will have a favorite and would fiercely defend their favorite team especially outsiders or foreigners.
Comoros have established their National Olympic Committee as early as 1979 but was not recognized by the International Olympic Committee until 1993. They first entered the Summer Olympic Games in 1996 which was held in Atlanta. They sent 4 athletes and have been sending athletes to each Summer Games since then. Sadly, Comoros is yet to take home a single Olympic medal as of the 2012 London Games.
