China at the Winter Olympic Games
China first participated at the Winter Olympic Games at the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, USA. The 2022 Winter Olympic Games will be held in Beijing.
The vast majority of the medals won by China at the Winter Games have come from short track speed skating. The nation have also won medals in other winter sports such as freestyle skiing, speed skating, figure skating and curling.
Chinese speed skatersIn 1992, Ye Qiaobo won China's first Winter Olympics medal in speed skating. Another short-track speed skating competitor, Yang Yang, won China's first Winter gold medal in 2002.
Wang Meng is without no doubt the best Chinese Winter Olympian. The short track speed skater won six medals (4 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze) from 2006 to 2010.
Another notable Chinese athlete at the Winter Games is Han Xiaopeng, who became first male athlete to win a Winter Olympics gold medal in freestyle skiing.
China’s medal haul of 5 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games is its best so far and it was good for 7th place on the medal tally. It appears like in 2022 they will surpass that record.
China's success in Beijing 2022 was also in part to several overseas born Chinese choosing to represent China, such as the 18-year-old Chinese-American Eileen Gu winning old in the women's big air event.
These athletes are part of the record number of Chinese athletes —176 — in the 2022 Games.
