Cabo Verde first participated in the Summer Games in 1996. In that year, the country sent a four-athlete delegation to Atlanta, USA. Of the four, only António Zeferino was able to advance but did not place higher than 94th in ranking. At the Paris Olymics, Cape Verde boxer David De Pina clinched his island nation's first Olympic medal with a quarter-final victory in the boxing.
