Cabo Verde first participated in the Summer Games in 1996. In that year, the country sent a four-athlete delegation to Atlanta, USA. Male runners Alfayaya Embalo, Henry Andrade and António Zeferino and female runner Isménia do Frederico represented Cabo Verde in athletics. Of the four, only António Zeferino was able to advance but did not place higher than 94th in ranking. The 1996 Summer Olympic Team was the biggest delegation that Cabo Verde has ever sent to the Summer Games to date.
At the Paris Olymics, Cape Verde boxer David De Pina clinched his island nation's first Olympic medal with a quarter-final victory in the boxing.
Cabo Verde are yet to participate in the Winter Games.
