Canoeing has been featured in the Summer Olympic Games since the 1936 Games in Berlin (though they were canoe demonstrations at the 1924 Paris Games). In the competitions from 1936 until 1956, there were canoe marathon events
The canoe marathon events at the Olympics were raced over 10km on flat water. The sport of canoe marathon sometimes involves sections where the participants also need to carry the canoe over land sections. The 10,000m canoe marathon races at the Olympics were contested in both singles and doubles, in kayaks and canoes, between 1936-56. The events were for men only.

The discontinued folding kayak event in 1936 was also held over 10km.
The most successful athlete in canoe marathon events was the Swede Gert Fredriksson, who won the singles kayak event in 1948 and 1956, and won silver in 1952.
