Belarus at the Winter Olympic Games

When the USSR was dissolved in 1991, Belarus, alongside four of the other fourteen former Soviet republics, took part at the Games as part of the Unified Team at the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympic Games. Two years later, Belarus competed for the first time as a sovereign country at the Games, held in Lillehammer, Norway. Since 1994, the small nation never missed winning medals at each Winter Games it has participated in.

Winter sports that provided medals to Belarus at the Winter Olympics include biathlon, freestyle skating and speed skating. The first gold medal for Belarus a was at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Freestyle Skiing Aerials, by Aliaksei Hryshyn, though Yevgeniy Redkin won the Men's 20 km Biathlon in 1992 as part of the Unified Team, and possibly other athletes from Belarus have won medals as part of the USSR.

Belarus’s most productive Winter Olympic campaign was at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games where it just sent 25 athletes though won six medals (5 gold and 1 bronze), finishing in 8th place on the medal tally.

Belarusian athletes that have shone at the Winter Games include Dárya Vladímirovna Dómracheva who won four medals (3 gold and 1 bronze) in biathlon from 2010 to 2014 and Aleksei Gennadyevich Grishin who captured two medals (1 gold and 1 bronze) in the aerials event in freestyle skiing. Grishin’s bronze medal in 2002 was his country’s sole medal. Grishin was a big sport hero on his country, a testament of this is his appearance on the 2010 Belarusian stamp.
