The year 2012 was another great year in sport. The major event of this year was the London Olympic Games. The USA finished on top of the medal tally, above China and the UK (TeamGB). The superstar was Usain Bolt winning the 100/200m double again.
The biggest story to rock the sporting world was Lance Armstrong being banned from the sport for life, and stripped of his seven Tour de France titles. In golf, Europe defeated the USA 14½ to 13½ in a miraculous comeback on the final day.
Roger Federer won his seventh Wimbledon title, matching the record held by Pete Sampras.
The highest paid sportsman according to Forbes Magazine was announced as boxer Floyd Mayweather with 85 million dollars in earnings. See some videos from the world of sport in 2012.
Following the final whistle of a league match between Al-Masry and Al-Ahly at Port Said Stadium, Port Said, hundreds of Al-Masry fans entered the pitch, attacked the Al-Ahly players, and next the Al-Ahly fans. In the subsequent chase and fights an estimated 79 Al-Ahly fans were killed.
The 2012 Laureus World Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards went to tennis player Novak Djokovic and long distance runner Vivian Cheruiyot.
