Here are the sporting highlights of the world of sport in 1993. Steffi Graf won three of the four tennis grand slam tournaments, and in English football, Manchester United ended a 26-year wait for the title.
In the 80th episode of Tour de France, Spanish rider Miguel Indurain won the event making him the only the fourth rider ever to win the event in three consecutive years.
Sergei Bubka, who is considered as the greatest pole vaulter ever, set a record of 6.15m on an indoor track, which stood for over two decades until February 2014, when Frenchman Renaud Lavillenie cleared 6.16m.
Monica Seles was dominating women's tennis and was slowly beginning to take the reins from Stefi Graf. She was ranked world no.1 and had just won the Australian Open that year defeating Graf before the dreadful incident on April 30th. A mentally unstable man, who claimed to be a Stefi Graf fan, stabbed her on the back during a match. After the incident, Seles stepped away from the game for over two years. Though she won the Australian Open again in 1996 she was nothing like the old Seles. What could she have achieved if the incident had not happened is something we'll never know.
Tennis great Arthur Ashe who had won three grand slams, died on Feb 6th at just 49. His death was due to HIV that he had contracted during a blood transfusion he received for a heart bypass surgery.
Also in 1993, the entire Zambia National Soccer team perished in a plane crash en route to Senegal for the 1994 U.S.A World Cup Qualifiers. All 30 passengers and crew, including 18 players as well as the coaches and support staff, were lost in the accident.
