Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1985.
The year saw the emergence of a first time grand slam winner Boris Becker who won Wimbledon. Ivan Lendl won the US Open that year defeating John McEnroe in straight sets. Becker and Lendl had a tremendous rivalry in the next several years with each defeating the other for many grand slam wins.
Martina Navratilova won her 100th title early in the year and went on to win Wimbledon and the Australian Open defeating her rival Chris Evert in the finals of both the events.
Though his off-the-ring behavior has been outright disgusting, few men have achieved what Mike Tyson has within the ring. He made his professional debut at just 18 years of age, and in his very first fight he defeated Hector Mercedes in the 1st round by a knockout. He went on to win his first 19 fights by knockout.
The year was a witness to one of the worst sports disaster ever which killed 56 and injured at least 265, when fire broke out during a football match at Bradford City stadium.
Bernard Hinault of France won the Tour de France for the fifth and final time, a feat which has been achieved only by two others in the history of the race.
56 people burned to death and more than 200 were injured when a fire engulfed the main stand at Bradford stadium in England. The fire had been facilitated by the stand's wooden structure and accumulated debris and garbage underneath the stand. It is likely that a discarded match or cigarette started the fire. There was also another stadium disaster, 39 fans, most of them Italians, were crushed or trampled to death in rioting involving supporters of the Liverpool and Juventus teams before the 1985 European Cup final at Heysel stadium in Brussels. More than 400 people were injured. Although the match continued to get played, the incident led to a 5-year ban of English teams in Europe.
