Sporting Highlights for 1973

Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1973.

John Newcombe became a five time grand slam winner taking the Australian Open. He also won the US Open that year. Ilie Năstase won the French Open for his second and final slam title, while Jan Kodeš won Wimbledon for his third career title.

In women's tennis, Margaret Court, who has the highest number of grand slams till this date including pre-open era tennis, won the three grand slams, for a career total of 24 grand slam titles. The Wimbledon title that Margaret missed out on was taken by Billie Jean King who also had a successful career with 12 slam titles.

Two "Battle of Sexes" matches were held that year, Bobby Riggs won the first against Margaret Court and lost to Billie Jean King on the second match.



Jack Nicklaus won his 12th major at the PGA Championship. He would go on to win six more in the following years for a total of 18 majors which stands for over three decades as the most major wins.

The heavyweight championship fight was conducted in Japan for the very first time and it was between two superstars. George Foreman easily emerged out as the winner against Joe Frazier in just two rounds.
