Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1964. The major events of this year in sport were the Summer and Winter Olympic Games.
The most notable performance in the Winter Games was by Lidia Skoblikova who won all the women's speed skating events, a feat that has not been matched to date. In the Summer Games, Larisa Latynina won two gold medals for a total of 18 Olympic gold medals, the most by any man or women gymnast to date.
Roy Emerson continued his success by taking the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open for his fifth, sixth, and seventh grand slam title. Emerson had more success in grand slams in the future finishing his career with a total of 12 grand slam titles. Margret Court, who has won the most women's grand slam titles to date, won the Australian Open and the French Open for her eighth and ninth grand slams. Maria Bueno, won at Wimbledon and the US Open, two of her total seven grand slam titles.
In LPGA, Mickey Wright won the U.S. Women's Open for the fourth time which was also her 12th major title. Mickey Wright later that year set a record for the lowest score ever by a woman at 62. Marilynn Smith defended her Titleholders Championship title which was her second and final victory in the majors. Arnold Palmer won the Masters Tournament for the third time, which was also the seventh and final major win for Arnold.
More than 300 fans died and about 500 were injured in a riot at Estadio Nacional in Lima at an Olympic qualifying match between Peru and Argentina. It all started when the referee canceled a goal in the last minute, and a fan ran onto the pitch in protest. After the police aggressively beat him down, angered fans in the stands led to rioting. It is the worst recorded stadium disaster in history.
