Sporting Highlights for 1950

Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1950. The major world sporting event of this year was the FIFA World Cup tournament.



It was the year of the fourth edition of the FIFA World Cup. The event was held for the first time since 1938, after 1942 and 1946 were wiped out because of the world war. Brazil the host nation, lost to Uruguay on the finals.

The fourth Commonwealth Games (then called the British Empire Games) was held in New Zealand.

The first Maccabiah Games were held in Tel Aviv. These Games were styled on the Olympic Games for Jewish athletes from around the world.

In golf, the PGA Tour money leader was Sam Snead with earnings of $35,759, though he did not win one of the majors. Babe Zaharias is one of the most accomplished women's golf player and has achieved a feat that has not yet been matched by any other women player. She won all the three majors that year, Women's Western Open, U.S. Women's Open and Titleholders Championship, for her eight major win till then. She picked up two more majors in the following years to finish her career with 10 major wins.

Budge Patty won his first grand slam title taking the French Open. He also won Wimbledon that same year for his second grand slam title. But Patty was unable to replicate his success even remotely in the following years and finished his career with only the two slam titles.

Louise Brough Clapp won the Australian Open for her fourth slam title. She had already won Wimbledon in last two years and was able to secure a hat-trick. She won at Wimbledon again after five years for her sixth and final grand slam title.
