Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1947.
This year, Jackie Robinson became the first black man to play major league baseball, when he was signed to a contract by the Brooklyn Dodgers.
The first-ever NBA champions was the Philadelphia Warriors, who beat the Chicago Stags four games to one. The NBA was not officially formed until the year 1949, though this final of the Basketball Association of America (BAA) is considered the first of the NBA championships.
Nancye Wynne Bolton won the Australian Open for the fourth time, part of her six career wins at the event. Margaret Osborne duPont and Louise Brough Clapp, two other six-time grand slam winners took Wimbledon and the US Open.
Jack Kramer had already won the US Open for his first grand slam title at the US Open the previous year and followed it up with two grand slam wins that year winning Wimbledon and the US Open. His success though did not continue in the future and finished his career with three slams that he had won by the end of that year.
Ben Hogan is one of the few players to have won all the four majors at least once. He won the U.S. Open for the first time that year for his second major win. He also won the PGA Championship the same year which was his second win at the event.
The Tour de France returned after a seven year break due to the second world war. Frenchman Jean Robic secured three stages and won the race by a close margin of 3min 58secs.
