Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1945. Many world sporting events were not held in this period due to the second World War.
It was yet another year of shortened grand slam events where the Australian Open and the Wimbledon were canceled due to World War II. The French Open which was held under German occupation is not officially recognized. The only recognized slam event held was the US Open. In the men's event, Frank Parker repeated his win from the previous year for his second career title. Sarah Palfrey Cooke won the women's event, which was also the second time she had won the US Open after a three year hold over the event by compatriot Pauline Betz Addie.
In men's golf, the Masters Tournament, the U.S. Open, and The Open Championship were all canceled due to the Second World War. The lone major tournament that was held on the year was the PGA Championship in which Byron Nelson emerged as the winner to secure his fifth and final major.
The only women's golf major held that year was the Women's Western Open which saw Babe Zaharias emerge as the victor for the second straight year.
Phil Jackson, the coach with the most number of NBA championships with two of the most prolific players the league has ever seen in Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, was born on September 17th.
