Sporting Highlights for 1942

Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1942. Many world sporting events were not held in this period due to the second World War, including the FIFA World Cup, Commonwealth Games (British Empire Games), British Golf Open, US Golf Open, and Wimbledon, the French and Australian Open Tennis, and the Tour de France.

Pauline Betz Addie won her first grand slam title at the US Open. She also won the event in the next two years and also for the fourth time two years later to finish her career with five grand slam wins. Ted Schroeder won the men's US Open for his first slam title. He won his second title at Wimbledon six years later to finish his career with two grand slam wins.

The Australian Open and Wimbledon were canceled this year due to the Second World War, and the French Open, held under German occupation is not officially recognized.

Men's golf also saw the cancellation of two major events, the U.S. Open and The Open Championship. In replacement of the US Open, a fund-raising tournament, the Hale American National Open, was played in Chicago and won by Ben Hogan. He would go on to win four US Open tournaments.

The two majors that were held were the Masters Tournament and the PGA Championship. Byron Nelson and Sam Snead won the respective events. It was Snead's first of his seven major titles. It was the second time Nelson won at the Masters Tournament and his fourth major title.

Betty Jameson and Dorothy Kirby won the Women's Western Open and the Titleholders Championship respectively for their first and second majors of their career. Though it was Dorothy's repeat at the event, her success did not progress in future years and had to settle with just two majors.
