Sporting Highlights for 1941
Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1941. Many world sporting events were not held in this period due to the second World War, including the British Golf Open, Wimbledon, the French and Australian Open Tennis, and the Tour de France.
The Australian Open was canceled due to the Second World War. French Open was held under German occupation and the results are not officially recognized. Wimbledon was canceled for the second year in a row. The only grand slam that took place was the US Open. Don McNeill, who won the French Open in the previous year, took the US Open title for his second grand slam title.
Sarah Palfrey Cooke took the women's US Open title for her first grand slam title. She won another US Open title four years later for her second and final slam.
Patty Berg the all-time record holder for women's majors with 15 wins, won the Women's Western Open for her fourth major. In the short history of women's major at that time, she was the first to four major titles.
In men's golf, the list of majors was shortened as The Open Championship was canceled due the world war. Craig Wood took two of the three major tournaments held that year for his first and second career titles.
Pete Rose, considered as one of the all-time great MLB player, and later banished from the league for his involvement in betting was born on the April 14th.
