Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1931.
In men's tennis, Jack Crawford, Jean Borotra, Sidney Wood, and Ellsworth Vines, won the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open respectively. It was the first grand slam title for Crawford and Vines, who finished their respective careers with six and three total slam titles.
Cilly Aussem won two grand slam titles this year, at the French Open and Wimbledon. However Aussem did not have much success in the future and had to finish her career with the two grand slam titles she won this year. After four consecutive multiple slam title years, Helen Wills Moody's streak came to an end with just one slam title this year, a win at the US Open.
Billy Burke, Tommy Armour, and Tom Creavy, won the U.S. Open, The Open Championship, and the PGA Championship tournaments respectively. Though it was the only major win for both Burke and Creavy, it was the third major win for Armour, the two previous wins coming from the other two major tournaments.
It was the second year running of Women's Western Open, the only women's major golf event, in which June Beebe emerged as the winner. June won the event again a year later for her second and final major title.
