Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1917. The ongoing world war had a major impact on sports also, as it had on most other things. Major international sporting events were canceled for the third straight year. Events which were not held included Wimbledon, the Australian Open Tennis and the British Golf Open, the US golf open, USPGA and the Tour de France.

The Belgians, who were having their own run at the Tour de France event, after years of French dominance, with three straight wins, were unable to extend their streak further. Though it took another two years for the event to finally return back to action, the Belgians were able to continue their run by winning it in the next four consecutive years.

The only major sporting event that was held that year and during all the years that the world war one lasted was the US Open tennis championship. In the men's competition, Robert Lindley Murray won the title. It was his first career grand slam. His second slam title also came from the same event the very next year.

Molla Bjurstedt Mallory took the women's US Open title. It was her third career grand slam title, all of them came from the same event. Molla went on to win the title the following year also and four more times in the future to become the only player in the history to win the US Open eight times.
