In this year, the first Boston marathon was run, now known as the world's oldest annual marathon. The event was inspired by the success of the first modern-day marathon competition in 1896.
Also this year, the world's first bobsled run is constructed at St. Moritz, Switzerland.
Aston Villa won the English football league title, and confirmed their place as the best team of the era when they also lifted the FA Cup, beating Everton 3-2 in a thrilling final. They became the second team to win the double (after Preston in 1888).
