Zambia first participated in the Olympics in 1964, competing under the name Northern Rhodesia before gaining independence. From that time on they were called Zambia.
Since their first appearance in 1964, Zambia has consistently sent athletes to almost every Summer Olympics, except for the 1976 Montreal Games, which they boycotted.
Despite its regular participation, Zambia has won only three Olympic medals:
- Keith Mwila, silver in boxing at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics
- Samuel Matete, silver in the men's 400m hurdles at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
- Muzala Samukonga, a bronze medal in the Men’s 400 meters in Paris 2024
Notable other performances also include boxer Lottie Mwale, who reached the quarterfinals in 1972, and swimmer Ellen Lendra, the first Zambian woman to compete in the Olympics in 1984.
Zambia has yet to win a medal at the Winter Olympics, reflecting its more significant focus on summer sports.
