North Yemen at the Olympics
North Yemen, also referred to as the Yemen Arab Republic, only exercised sovereignty around 1967 to 1990 so their participation to the Olympics is not that great. They only participated in two Summer Olympics, in 1984 and 1988.
From 1992 onwards after the unification of Yemen in 1990, athletes from this region have competed for Yemen. See more about South Yemen and Yemen at the Olympics.
North Yemen made their debut in 1984 by sending two athletes, Abdul Al-Ghadi (800 meters) and Ali Al-Ghadi (5000 and 10000 meters), to Los Angeles, California, USA. Unfortunately, both athletes were not able to get past the semifinals stage.
In 1988, North Yemen sent a delegation composed of eight athletes who represented them in eight events in three sports (Athletics, Judo and Wrestling) in Seoul, South Korea. Like in the previous Summer Olympics, none of their athletes were able to win a medal.
They also have never participated in any of the Winter Games. The 1988 Summer Games was the last Olympic Games that North Yemen participated in because the country was unified with South Yemen and were represented as simply Yemen from the 1992 Summer Games onwards.
