How The Tour Winner Is Determined
The rider with the lowest total time at the end of the event is declared the overall winner of the Tour. Time bonuses, in the form of a number of seconds to be deducted from the rider's overall time, are available to the first three riders to finish each stage or cross an intermediate sprint.
As of 2005, the first three places to finish are awarded bonuses of 20, 12 and 8 seconds respectively, while the first three places at intermediate sprints are awarded 6, 4 and 2 seconds. During the event, leaders in particular categories wear colored jerseys (see more information about jerseys).
Multiple Winners
Only five men have won the event five times, and one of these has won it seven times. The first to win the race five times was French rider Jacques Anquetil. Others to also accomplish this feat were Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and then Spaniard Miguel Indurain. In 1999, American Lance Armstrong had his first win, and didn’t stop until he had won it a record seven times in a row (see more about Lance). In 2012, all of his wins were removed from the record books due to doping during this period.
