Equipment Required: the appropriate sporting equipment and a nice stretch of beach and water
Activities
- Swimming: a fantastic whole-body workout with strength, flexibility and cardiovascular benefits. Modify this activity by going faster, changing strokes, or staying in the water for longer.
- surfing: getting up on your board and paddling out against the waves are some the most strenuous activities you can do at the beach.
- Beach football: If you fancy a bit of a kick around with your friends, then beach footy is not only good for a laugh, but great for giving your legs and buttocks a workout.
- Frisbee: a perfect activity for the beach. It is not high intensity, but it is fun and it will burn calories over time. This activity works your upper back and arm muscles and can provide good cardiovascular conditioning if you have to continually run to catch the frisbee.
- Volleyball: great fun and a fantastic workout for arms, legs and core muscles.
- Playing with the kids: Shoveling sand to make a sand castle or a moat can be great exercise, or collecting shells will require lots of bending over.
Key points to remember
- Warm up before any exercise program. At the beach, a run and some stretches is a good way to start.
- If it is sunny, don't forget to cover yourself up with a hat or some sunscreen. If it is hot, be sure to drink lots of water to stay well hydrated.
