Ukraine at the Winter Olympics

Ukraine competed at the Winter Olympic Games as a sovereign nation for the first time in Lillehammer, Norway in 1994, and have participated at the Winter Games from then on. The Yellow-blues team has just won medals in two winter sports: figure skating and biathlon.

The former Soviet republic competed at the Summer and Winter Games as part of the USSR from 1952 to 1988. The disintegration of the Soviet Union into 15 republics gave rise to the nation’s participation at the Olympics as an independent nation.

The nation captured its first gold medal at its first appearance at the Winter Games as figure skater Oksana Baiul won gold in the women’s singles event. The two medals (1 gold and 1 bronze) won by the nation in 1994 is its best so far at the Winter Games and its performance was good enough to place 13th on the medal tally.

After winning its first-ever gold medal in 1994, however, the nation suffered a gold medal shutout from 1998 to 2010. The nation finally tasted winning a gold medal after more than one decade of long wait as its women’s relay team in biathlon won the gold medal at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games.
