- Beijing was announced as the winning bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics in July 2015 by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The other candidate host city was Almaty in Kazakhstan.
- Beijing was the first city to have hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games.
- Haiti and Saudi Arabia made their Winter Olympics debut in 2022.
- The Winter Olympic Games mascot for Beijing was a panda named Bing Dwen Dwen, which had a "suit of ice, a heart of gold and a love of all things winter sports". For the Paralympic Games, the mascot was a Chinese lantern child named Shuey Rhon Rhon.
- The number of medal events for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics increased to 109, the most ever.
- North Korea was banned from competing at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games after the country's National Olympic Committee was suspended following its no-show at Tokyo 2020.
- The Motto for the Beijing Games is "A pure passion for ice and snow", which is somewhat ironic considering that these Games were the first to be mostly held on artificial snow.
- India joined the diplomatic boycott of the Games in response to the Olympic Torch Relay including a soldier involved in a border skirmish with the Indian Army June 2020.
- The inaugural mixed team ski jumping event at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics was marred by controversy, as a bunch of competitors were disqualified because of their baggy clothing (many had worn the same outfit previously with no problems).
- Germany's Francesco Friedrich made history in Beijing 2022, with his second consecutive Olympic bobsleigh double (he piloted the winning team in the two-man and four-man bobsleigh, in 2018 and 2022)
- German speed skater Claudia Pechstein became the oldest female to compete at the Winter Olympics. She was competing in her 8th Winter Olympics, aged 49 years 362 days when she competed in the mass start speed skating event. The race was held three days before her 50th birthday.
- Extreme cold and wind caused the Men's 50 km cross-country freestyle mass start event in Beijing 2022 to be delayed by an hour and reduced to 28km.
