- The Gay Games was originally going to be called the Gay Olympics. However, legal action from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) forced organizers to drop the word Olympics and change the name to the Gay Games, which it has had ever since.
- The Gay Games flame is lit at the opening ceremony.
- There are no qualifying standards to compete in the Gay Games.
- The 2022 Gay Games was postponed until a year later due to the pandemic
