Sport in Togo
Togo is a small country located in West Africa. With a land area of about 22,000 square miles, it is one of the smallest countries in the region. But what the country lacks in size, more than makes up with their love of sports.
Traditional wrestlers in Togo Togo particularly favors one sport above all and that is football. Though internationally, they have hardly made a dent in the sport, the Togolese people have not lost their passion for the sport. Like most of the countries in the region like Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal, Togo has also qualified for the World Cup (2006).
Togo also have a soft spot for other sports as well as produced some noteworthy sportsmen like boxer Zafrou Balloqou who was considered as one of the top in the super middleweight division in the 1990’s. Joining Zafrou in dominating the ring are Abdoukerin Hamidou and Yacoubou Moutakilou. Tennis player Gérard Loglo also made a name for himself and carried the Togolese flag in the 1999 Davis Cup.
Togo has been competing in various international events including the Olympics since 1972 but their very first Olympic medal came in the 2008 Summer Games when Benjamin Boukpeti took the third place in kayaking.
