Star

The new sport of Star was created by C.J. Cronin from The Gold Coast, Australia in January 2017. STAR contains elements of 4 well-known sports and combines them into a unique new sport: STAR includes elements of SOCCER, TENNIS, AUSTRALIAN RULES and RUGBY LEAGUE/UNION.

Summary

The game is played on a circular field within a 20m radius for teens 13 to adult, and 15m for children 12 and below. The circle is divided into two semi-circles by the 'tryline' where there is a Rugby goal post set.

The ball is a standard indoor soccer ball. The object is to kick the ball between the uprights, over the crossbar, and strike the ground before the ball is caught by the opposition.  When a ball is successfully kicked it is termed "hot", when unsuccessful "cold" i.e. "It's hot", "It's cold!"

Equipment Required: One indoor soccer ball, one set of Rugby goalposts, mini field markers.

Details

1 point is awarded for a punt kick, 2 points for a drop kick or place kick.  A short game is first to 6 points, a long game first to 12 points. Players swap sides as either side reaches 3 points (short game) or 6 points (long game).

If the ball is 'cold' and does not cross the tryline after being kicked the opposition player is awarded a penalty kick from any position on the 15m sideline they choose. The kick must be taken immediately. If the ball strikes a post or crossbar and bounces back to the kicker's side it is 'cold' and the same restart rule applies.

If the ball is 'cold' but crossed the tryline the receiving player need not catch it on the full. That player has an immediate choice, they can return the kick from where it was first touched or take a penalty kick from any position on the 15m line. Either kick must be taken immediately. Penalty kicks can be punt, dropkick or placed kick.

When the ball is caught it must be kicked within 5 seconds, from the position where the ball was first touched, or beyond it, except for penalties. A penalty is given against the kicker if a kick is not taken within 5 seconds.

If a ball is kicked to the sideline, either in a 15m or 20m game, and strikes the ground either inside the sideline or on the sideline, on-the-line is 'in'  and counts for points. In that case the next kick must be taken from where the ball crossed or touched the sideline. If the ball goes 'out on the full', the restart kick may be taken immediately from anywhere along the 15m line.

Singles:  This involves a player either side of the tryline. A toss of a coin decides who will kick off and it is taken from the 15m line directly in front of the uprights.

Doubles: There are two players either side. The game is played the same as singles but with one difference. On catching a ball a player may kickpass or handball to his/her partner in a different position on their side of the field. This may be done twice before the kick must be taken. The kickpass or handball must be taken from the position where the ball was first touched or caught. Dropping a kickpass or handball awards one point to the opposition.

Teams: Teams can be up to as many players as desired but 5 per side is recommended. The same rules for doubles applies to teams. A rule specific to teams is the  up-and-under touch rule. A player may opt to kick a high up-and-under. If  the ball is 'hot' the kicker may then rush the catcher. Once the catcher has caught the ball they may be touched by the kicker. If touched before they can handball or kickpass or return kick the ball then the catcher is out of the game. If the kicker fails to touch the catcher before they handball, kickpass or return kick the ball then the kicker is out of the game.  If the kicker touches the catcher before they catch the ball they are out of the game. Once the kicker is over the tryline they cannot abort their attempt to touch the catcher. The catcher may decline to catch the ball in which case the kicker has scored a point or points for his/her team, and may return to his/her side, with the ball, to restart anywhere on the 15m line. If the kicker blocks the catcher's kick, kickpass or handball the catcher is out of the game, the kicker receives one point, and returns to his/her side with the ball to restart play.
