Of the hundreds of fitness tests on Topend Sports, there are a few tests designed specifically to assess the fitness of rowers. As testing on the water is difficult, these tests utilize a rowing ergometer.
These can be used for assessing the fitness of rowers, in combination with other generic fitness tests. See our discussion of fitness testing for rowing.
While field tests are important to identify which areas of fitness may need improvement and to monitor changes in fitness with training, it is also important to make sure the tests are specific to the sport of rowing. The best way to do this is to conduct tests on a rowing ergometer.
Rowing Tests
- Rowing Beep Test — This is an incremental test performed on a rowing ergometer, similar to the running beep test. The athletes ramp up the stroke rate in time to audio cues, until they can no longer keep up.
- 500m Rowing Ergometer Test — The aim it to virtually cover 500m on an indoor rowing ergometer as quickly as possible. This was once part of a Talent Identification Testing Program for rowers.
- 2km Rowing Ergo Test — The aim it to virtually cover 2000m in the fastest time which is the distance of most rowing competition races.
- 5K Rowing Ergo — The 5000 meters) Rowing Ergo Test is part of the testing for the US marines, as an alternate to the 3-mile run. It is used as a general endurance test, not specifically aimed at rowing athletes.
